So often our grandparents tell us absurd stories about how they walked uphill both ways to school, learned how to drive the pickup truck when they were 7, and got spanked with barb wire when they lied. Occasionally they throw in a grain of truth to teach us a lesson like, "we were so poor we ate bread and milk for two weeks straight and we never complained because we were grateful not to have to go to bed hungry!" I imagine these stories are to give us some insight to how privileged our lives have become compared to theirs and how no amount of trials and tribulations will strengthen us the way milking 15 cows each morning at 4:30 am did for them! I in fact loved these stories and relished in hearing them from my own grandparents I am thankful for the insight and have learned many a lesson from them. The other day Great Grandpa Cowen told Avonleah a whopper of a story that Scott says he has used for years, and I swear Avonleah believed it with all her little heart, she is still under the impression that respect for our elders includes believing that they would never, ever, ever tell a lie. He is missing part of his pinky finger and there is a small hole where the scar healed up weird, so he tells Avonleah that this is where he stores his salt so when he's eating corn he can salt it. From the look on her face you can tell she's not sure about this but is altogether thrilled at the idea!
